On May 13- June 11, 2010, eight U2H members traveled to Ghana to learn more about its healthcare system and the country itself. While there, they visited the Tamale Teaching Hospital where U2H sent a 40′ container of medical supplies to in March 2009. They were able to see the supplies being put to use and received valuable feedback from the staff on how to improve future shipments. In addition, they spent time at the Sene District Hospital in Ghana where U2H will be sending a 40′ container of medical supplies to on Aug. 5 to furnish a newly built 40 bed ward. This included spending several days living in the CHPS compounds where nurses provide primary care services to the surrounding villages. The members also spent time in Kumasi and Accra, developing the Ghana Art Project and visiting different organizations and hospitals. Welcome home!

Dr.Anthony Ofosu, the medical director at the Sene District Hospital in Ghana, visited Ann Arbor for the weekend on 4/10-4/11. Dr. Ofosu was in America for a USAID conference during the month of April and came to Ann Arbor to visit the U2H warehouse and speak at the Benefit Dinner . U2H is currently preparing for a 40′ container to be sent to the Sene District Hospital where it will help outfit a new 40-bed ward that is currently being built.

United 2 Heal may have received a special, indirect shout-out from Mary Sue Coleman at Commencement 2010. During her energetic speech, the U of M President gave lots of praise to service-oriented students. As she prepared to introduce Governer Granholm and President Obama to an enormous Big House crowd, she seemed to give an extra prideful hint at some particularly exceptional service-oriented students:

“… And this is a class of graduates who in past years have worked to rebuild Haiti, support military veterans, collect surplus medical supplies for those without, and safeguard our natural environment. Four out of five graduates have taken part in community service. Michigan students have stepped forward to give more than 35,000 days of service in one year. Graduates, your community service is praise-worthy and important.”

Watch the clip here: http://ummedia10.rs.itd.umich.edu/flash/nis/nis.html. (President Colemen’s U2H shout-out begins at 29:05.)

No matter how you slice it, she is certainly proud of the exceptional work U2H does as a huge group of volunteers. No denying that quite a few of those “35,000 days of service” were spent at the U2H warehouse! And quite frankly, there just aren’t too many other student groups on campus “collecting medical supplies for those without.” Great work, everybody!

Good looks, President Colemen. We appreciate your support!

- Jacob
